Chapter Twenty-one

Maggie stretched languorously in bed, like a cat. What a night! She felt the other side of the bed where Jason should have been. But the sheets were cold, and an icy feeling immediately ran through her veins. She sprang up, her eyes wide open, her heart racing.

“Jason, no!” Maggie murmured at this sad reality that broke her heart.

Feeling nauseous, she sat, all alone, unable to move. Why had Jason left? The night they had just spent together had been fantastic. She had never imagined anyone could experience such pleasure, but the most incredible thing had been when she made Jason come. What power…but why was she alone this morning?

It took a moment for Maggie, paralysed with fear, to understand the noise she was hearing. At the sound of pots and pans banging together, she sat up straight, hope filling her. Jason was here. She hadn’t left her. She fell back on her pillow like a rag doll. She swallowed mouthfuls of air and massaged the skin over her heart until she felt calm. And just when she was about to get up, the bedroom door opened with Jason holding a tray in her hands.

The bright smile that welcomed Jason made all her final apprehensions fly away. Maggie clearly didn’t have any regrets. Jason cursed herself for having waited so long to tell Maggie the truth. When Jason had waked before dawn, she had been afraid Maggie would regret their wild night together. The liberty of their lovemaking had reminded her of long-ago afternoons spent with Kathryn, her first lover.

But the years that had passed, filled with bad experiences, had demoralized Jason. She had feared Maggie’s reaction this morning. So she took her time—got up, fed the animals, cleaned the stable, and prepared breakfast. When the sun was already fairly high, she started to wonder if Maggie might be hiding in her bedroom. So Jason had forced herself to make tea and take Maggie her breakfast in bed.

She silently placed the tray next to Maggie.

“Breakfast in bed? It’s shocking.”

Now that she was reassured, Maggie felt in a playful mood. She hungrily eyed the pancakes and jam. Seeing only one cup of tea, she frowned. “Aren’t you going to have breakfast with me?”

“I left my cup in the kitchen. Be right back.”

Maggie could sense the nervousness in Jason’s voice and her jerky movements. She sighed. They would have to have a true discussion this morning. She didn’t want to, but she couldn’t let Jason shut down, wrapped in fear and silence.

Jason came back with her cup but just stood there, apparently not knowing what to do with herself.

“Either you get undressed and come to bed with me, or I’ll dress, and we’ll eat in the kitchen,” Maggie said in a mocking tone. “I feel vulnerable because you have clothes on and I don’t.”

Seeing that Jason was too scared to move, she ordered in a husky voice, “Undress.”

Jason licked her lip and drank a sip of tea before placing her cup on the night table before taking off her clothes.
